Meta-geoscience: the Reality of Nature and the Nature of Reality
Dr Michael Schoenberg from Curtin University of Technology (Australia) will give a special geophysics seminar which should be of interest to the wider science community, and indeed anyone interested in the philosophy of science. Mike is a world expert on wave propagation and will talk on Meta-geoscience: the Reality of Nature and the Nature of Reality

Abstract:
Our image of the natural world has been changed by instrumentation designed to enhance our senses - giving us better eyes (telescopes, microscopes, capability in frequency bands other than visible light), ears, noses (chemical detectors), etc. In a certain sense the ‘box’ we call Nature in which we find our planet and ourselves has been enlarged, from the scale of quarks to the scale of billions of light years. But one characteristic of this greatly widened view of the universe is common to a characteristic at other times: that characteristic is that we think we are ‘seeing’ everything that is crucial to getting the big picture, so that somehow our model of our surroundings is more or less in agreement with ‘reality’. Gott’s Copernican principle is applied to show that in all probability our image of the universe, which is always bounded by our knowledge, is likely to be very different in the relatively near (50 years) future.
