Wednesday, 5 December, 9:30 AM » 4:00 PM
Site event

Members of SUPA may be interested in a meeting on 5 December in Edinburgh on "Research-Teaching Linkages in the Physical Sciences". It aims to showcase and discuss some of the ways in which our undergraduate students' education is enriched by research-related activities. Registration for the event is free, and can be done online at

This is part of the outcome of a small project funded by QAA Scotland in which staff at Edinburgh and St Andrews have been looking for interesting linkages in Scotland's Physics and Chemistry departments. The good news is that there is lots of great stuff going on across Scotland, and with a variety of practices across the sector where we can learn from each other. We thank colleagues from Scotland's universities who have talked with us, and who have agreed to contribute to the meeting and final report.

"Research-teaching linkages" is interpreted rather more generally than students being involved in research teams for their final year projects, though this is one good and strong example of the linkage. It also includes students learning in "research mode". This means that enquiry based learning, literature search with article writing, open-ended lab work, summer internships with research teams, etc are all included.

Best regards, Marialuisa Aliotta, Simon Bates, Antje Kohnle, Bruce Sinclair
