Part II: Dilute Polymer Solutions, Nonlinear Viscoelasticity

I will describe nonlinear polymer dynamics, including the large differences in polymer stretching behavior in extensional vs. shearing flows. Direct imaging under flow is presented of optically visible single DNA molecules in flows, and rheological measurements for conventional polymer solutions are presented as well. Solutions to the Langevin equation using ensembles of bead-spring chains is able to reproduce many, but not all, of the observed phenomena. Finally, nonlinear polymer dynamics in microflows are discussed, with biotechnology applications.
