Academic Engagement Day
Tuesday 18th November 2008
Senate Room, University of Glasgow
10.00 - 16.30

You are invited to attend an Academic Engagement Seminar with the MOD Centre for Defence Enterprise on Tuesday 18th November.

The Centre for Defence Enterprise is a Ministry of Defence initiative to fund ideas with the potential to ensure that the best equipment, science and technology gets into our Armed Forces.

This seminar will deal specifically with the ways in which academia can interact with CDE and the specific funding routes available.

Universities are invited to apply for seedcorn funding of up to £120K under the following specific themes:

  • Nano and Quantum
  • Future Computing / Information Systems
  • Human / Group Behaviour
  • Advanced Materials
  • Flexible and Adaptive Systems

Universities may also apply for funding through the usual CDE submission route where funding of up to £250K is available. Projects usually have a duration of up to 24 months.

This seminar will also give you the opportunity to present your research to CDE.

Topics at the seminar will include:

  • How the CDE works
  • Engaging with Universities
  • 50 CDE PhDs
  • University Seedcorn Funding : 5 Themes
  • How to submit a proposal to the CDE
  • Academic Presentations

CDE is the first point of contact for anyone with a disruptive technology, new process or innovation that has a potential defence application. The CDE acts as a gateway, bringing together innovation and investment for the defence market, ensuring that our front-line forces stay one step ahead of the enemy.  CDE has already approved over £1M worth of research proposals since opening its doors in June 2008.

Dr Helen Almey, who is Head of the Centre for Defence Enterprise, will be the main speaker at this seminar. We will also be joined by Dr Chris Mace, Director General Science and Technology Operations, who is responsible for the delivery of the MOD Research Programme, during the afternoon session.

The seminar is free of charge and will start with registration and coffee at 10:00 and close at 16:30 . Lunch and refreshments are included and there will be opportunities to network with the speakers and members of the CDE team.
