By exploiting the broken symmetries of the standard model, accurate theoretical calculations can be performed at low energies by effective field theory. Several examples of experimental tests involving pion production and scattering will be discussed; these test predictions based on spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD. The close linkage between photo-pion production and pi-N scattering will be emphasized to show how new physics can be obtained. A new measurement of the lifetime of the neutral pi meson will be briefly discussed. This decay amplitude is dominated by the axial anomaly of QCD, modified by a small isospin breaking chiral correction which is proportional to the mass difference of the up and down quarks.
