Meeting with Scottish Maths Support Network

Hello everyone,

I mentioned briefly at the last meeting that the Scottish Maths Support Network (SMSN) has engaged in discussion with the Edinburgh Mathematical Society to revive the Mathematics Education Research group in Scotland. One avenue that is explored is that SMSN becomes the Maths Education Research networking group.

In view of this, and given that we have discussed that the summer school for PER is not going to happen before summer 2026, SMSN is suggesting to open the SMSN annual meeting this year to the PER group, and run it as a joint M-ER/P-ER event. The SMSN annual meeting is usually taking place in June (first Friday of June): we have not set a date yet, but it would probably be happening around that time.

One suggestion is to host the event at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (https://www.icms.org.uk/). It will be a convenient location for most of Scotland, and provided we fit within their remit (which we will through M-ER), we can book the venue for free. There is also funding we can apply to for catering, travel expenses etc... (https://www.icms.org.uk/funding-opportunities/ke-event-fund).

Let me know what you think, and if the group would like to go ahead with this. Anyone who would be interested in drawing a programme together, applying for funds, etc, let me know.

Many thanks for this, and apologies for the delay in replying. This looks like a good opportunity to partner and have joint discussions with colleagues who will have similar interests. It may be interesting to explore this in more details, including deadlines etc. What is the remit of the new M-ER group - are they looking at e.g. school and HE education?

Happy New Year to you and everyone on PER! Sorry, I am only getting round to replying now.

MER would like to look at school as well as HE education, although SMSN itself is HE only, so the SMSN annual meeting in June would be focusing on HE Educ. I have a meeting with Emma Coutts on Monday next week. Emma is the chair of SMSN and our link to the EMS: I will ask her about any progress on discussions about the MER group and the June meeting and will update anyone.
