Dear colleagues,
On September 3rd, 2025, we (SUPER) will be running a workshop meeting which we would like to invite you to, it will be held in the University of Strathclyde in central Glasgow. We know this is a busy time for everyone involved in undergraduate teaching, but it has been chosen as a balance between holiday time and the thick of teaching time.
We hope to have every Scottish University with a UG Physics department represented and the event will be of interest to anyone working in Physics Undergraduate teaching, and especially those with work which relates to first- and second-year students. This includes, but is not limited to, teachers, technicians, researchers, and academic staff.
The aim of the meeting will be to share good practice and develop an understanding of skills, learning and teaching in undergraduate physics courses in Scotland. Specifically, experimental, tactile, and problem-solving capabilities of incoming students will be considered with the aim of improving the secondary to tertiary transition in the Scottish context. Research data will be collected during the event. This is intended to be the start of a new collaborative project in Scottish UG physics teaching.
An outline of the day (the start is intended to allow travel from all parts of Scotland):

11:30 Workshop one: Identifying needs and issues in the areas of transition, lab skills and problem solving
13:00 Networking lunch (provided)
14:00 Workshop two: Current and future practice – working to resolve the ideas raised in workshop one
15:30 Summary of the day including opportunity to be involved in future work
16:00 – 17:00 Optional networking and further discussion

Note that, should you wish to be involved, but cannot make this initial meeting, there will be the opportunity to give some information through the form.
We have set aside funds to cover some travel expenses, especially where travel is from further afield. Please use the form to indicate if you would like to apply for expenses for this purpose. These funds are intended to ensure that finances are not a barrier to attendance. We will inform you in advance of the amount which can be covered, and this will be based on distance. Please use public transport where possible. If the allocated amount is insufficient, please get in contact with us.
